So of course my Monday morning always starts off the same. Prayer, music, dancing around my office to a little BEYONCE and indulging in my new favorite a “VANILLA CUP OF JOE”.
Now that I've shared a little bit of my Monday morning ritual with you, let me get in to today's blog. So last night The BET Awards came on, I didn't plan to watch it,(don't watch much television) but something told me to catch a little bit of it.
When I heard that there would be a collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and Beyonce, I knew it would be a political statement. So I prepared myself to watch performance like the rest of the world. I knew that these two together would be electrifying. As you know by now they set the tone for the rest of the evening, and it caused an entire host of emotions in me as I watched. It hit every part of my body, first my physical, then my consciousness, next my very soul.
Their performance was a statement for all to hear, and see about the state of Blacks in America, and the true freedom that should be afforded. Through bold imagery, and “In your Face “ lyrics, it challenges everything that is wrong about America and they didn't suggest, they to,d the POWERS THAT BE, that its time to change it.
So as I pondered later in the evening on what I witnessed, I began to think about the lady we call BEYONCE, and what it is about her that makes her so amazing, but yet so ordinary. I wondered why is it that we love her so much, without even k nowing her.
So I looked at my own life, and noticed that we have some things in common. I began to think on the simple things that she as a woman, a black woman, a creative woman, a business woman, and a mother and wife goes through and I found some commonalities.
What makes or ordinary and relatable
1. She's a Southern Girls
Beyonce was born from parents born in Alabama and Louisiana, and raised in Dallas. I am a southern girl, raised in Alabama from both parents born there. Because of this upbringing, I notice that both her mother and father were instrumental in her life, and she felt loved, valued and happy.
When I was growing up, both of my parents raised me, and I felt safe, loved, valued and happy. (We both were daddy's girls).
I believe what makes this way powerful, is that she continues to show the world that even though she came from a small town , she still became an ICON in her own right, and she didn't have to change her core values.
She remains humble, even though she has “BUYING” power to do what she wants and desires to do, but always remains that girl from Houston Texas.
I realize that in my own life, that as I have grown, I take all of my life with me. You see who I am, and why I am. I'm very simple. I don't shy away from being from a small town, and I often give so much credit to my community for who I am. I'm proud to be a small town girl with big dreams.
2. Her love for her mother
As long as we have seen her, we know that her mother has been with her during her entire professional career, since she was 15 years old as a stylist, and whatever role she needed to be in. We recognize her just as much as we recognize Beyonce herself. Her mother is clearly her rock.
In my very own life,my mother has always been my rock. And my number one support, with giving sound advice, love, and a kick in the pants when I needed it. If you ever follow my writings, teachings, radio or television I share several life lessons and experiences that my mom has taught me.
What makes this wonderful is that you can see she has a respect for her mother, and a deep admiration for her. This is something that we don't always get a chance to see from people that seem to be so big. To the world she is this larger than life icon, but she shows us through the relationship she has with her mom, that she doesn't know it all, she still needs wise council.
No matter how many people I speak with around the world, I don't know it all. I lean on my mothers experience, and words of wisdom, her insight and her love. I respect those who have lived, while I'm still learning. That ability to do that allows us to keep growing along with those who look to us.
3.SHES CREATIVE IN EVERYTHING SHE DOES
Now I believe it's because we both are Virgos(so is Michael Jackson) and we are naturally creative beings, and love to push the envelope and color outside of the lines. So maybe that's another thing we have in common.
One of the biggest things that separates her from other performers is her ability to do it in a creative way. After watching her behind the scenes documentaries, I see that she takes influences from the world, ideas of the world, and even abstract concepts. That automatically takes her from being stifled and put into a box as just a singer.
I believe one of my biggest gifts is that of creation. I have always been that kid who saw what wasn't there, who always did things bigger than life. As a writer, it was important to me to create a range of emotions as your eyes would glance from left to right on the page. I didn't want to just write, I wanted to create something that would resonate so deeply that it alone could change your mind. (I guess it's the dancer in me)
4.SHE CREATES THE LIFE SHE WANTS AND GETS IT
The world has watched this young lady from doing talent shows in ber local area, winning “Star Search”, having a successful career with Destinys Child, and creating a solo career that has surpassed most peoples idea of what she could really do. She has continuously set goals and reached them no matter what the odds were.
In my own life, I have always wanted things that didn't necessarily make sense to those around me, I was able to trade millions of dollars on the Chicago Board of Trade in my early twenties and thirties as the only Black Woman in my firm. I was able to become a Business woman, and create and develop several different shows in radio broadcasting, write scripts, Ghost write, host a television show, Coach amazing people, and the rest will be revealed real soon. (Smile)
The reason I'm sharing what I believe are some things I have in common with Beyonce is not to brag at all. It is to clearly show you that it's the Simple things that we all share with one another that makes us loveable, human, and successful.
It's these small things that I believe that elevated her to the top. Remember we all have the ability to be great. If you hold on to your core values, and keep good people around you, you can have whatever you ask for in this life.
My advice is this:Keep it simple, don't try to reinvent the wheel.
Believe in yourself, keep good people on your circle, and clearly define what you want out of life.
Remember, I KAN WITH KIM, and most importantly, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
