As I was getting ready to speak to a group of young people on yesterday I pondered on what I really wanted my message to be about. I mean, I knew I was there to speak about my journey as a writer, but I always want to leave anyone thatI speak with something that can truly impact them. So as I listened to the Professor introduce me, I looked around at the eclectic array of students.
As I looked at them closely I saw that they were from different places around the world, and after asking them during my presentation where there were from, I heard Japan, Greece, even good ol' North Carolina, and so on. It was so refreshing to me, because I knew in that moment a piece of me and message would be spread to those parts of the world.
I was able to share that my first story was written when I was in the third grade, and I realized right in that moment that I was able to connect to apart of myself that was both exciting and scary at the same time, because it resonated with those around me, and now the light was on me.
I could uld no longer hide.....because my new found talent was now exposed! They laughed as I shared these different stories in my life, and I got a chance to feel like that little girl again, who occasionally wants to come out to get a little attention. I must admit, it felt great.
So of course everything In me, wanted to come out, but as I was sharing my start as a writer, I looked closely at their expressions, body language, gestures and eyes. They were fascinated, intrigued, and desiring more. I realized in that moment that these young people have the right attitude to go after what's in life for them.
You see, it was the bright light in their eyes that reminded me that there is a lot of living to do. New things to see, new ideas to be thought of, new territories to cover, new inventions, new creations all in that one room. They were primed for it. As I turned my "talk" into a conversation between myself and the students, I began to see what made them smile, They opened up, one by one, as I shared with them how the simple things made me fulfilled.
They shared their love for animals, helping others, and their true passions. I explained to them to never lose those things as they go off into the world trying to make a life for themselves. I felt alive, full of energy, and fulfilled while speaking with them, because I was able to use my gifts, purpose and passion, because it wasn't long ago that I was in their shoes sitting in those seats wondering what my life would become.
They could see it and feel it, and I believe they appreciated it.
I KAN WITH KIM THOUGHT OF THE DAY: Take each day and appreciate where you are, slow down, look around and look inside of yourself to see what truly makes you happy. Spend time with that feeling. Spend time with those thoughts. You are exactly where you need to be. Take the lessons in life and make them work for you. You are gifted, talented and amazing. The world needs you. Remember that.
